The largest item of expenditure for St. Andrew’s is its annual contribution to the Ministry and Mission Fund (M&M). £32,563 in 2025, rising to £42,192 in 2026. Here’s an explanation of what the Fund is, and how it is calculated.
The Fund is the key element is the plan for partnership in the wider church. It pays for
- Stipends
- Training costs
- General Assembly projects
- Pensions
- Administration and governance costs, including the meeting of General Assembly
Contributions do not relate to the amount of ministerial time received by the local church.
“We don’t pay for what we get, we give that all might receive”.
The Fund represents £18 million annual income across the United Reformed Church, of which 86% comes from local churches. Although the request is made by Synod, none of the money goes to Synod. It is considered to be the ‘first call’ on the funds of local churches, with priority over everything else.
Thames North Synod has, since 2019, used a formula based on income. This formula does not take into account membership. This explains why St. Andrew’s has faced wide fluctuations in its M&M contributions reflecting changing income before, during and after the Covid epidemic.
The agreed formula is as follows: 60% of the local church’s Investment Income, 50% of Property Rent, 22% of Halls Letting (this recognises the costs in earning that income), 47% of Other Income and 10% of any Legacy.
Churches are asked to confirm the amount that they will give by the end of October, for the following year.
In 2025 churches in Thames North Synod contributed £1,993,758 to the Fund.
